Lightweight Portable Stages: What Buyers Should Compare

A man carries one folded MyStage deck by its strap to an SUV with two more decks in the cargo area

A lightweight portable stage in Canada should be judged on five things you can check: one deck's weight, its folded size, how it is carried, the setup steps and tools, and the load rating. A MyStage deck weighs 42 lbs (19 kg), folds to 2 ft x 4 ft and is rated to 3,400 lbs (1,542 kg).

This guide is for small crews and mobile event teams who move a stage often. It turns "lightweight" from a sales word into questions you can put to any supplier, including MyStage, so you can compare the answers side by side.

What does "lightweight" mean for a portable stage?

"Lightweight" should mean that the heaviest single piece your crew lifts is manageable for the people you actually have. That piece is usually one deck. The total weight of a finished stage matters for freight and storage, but the per-piece weight decides how many people you need on setup day.

  • Deck: one platform section. Every MyStage stage is built from the same 4 ft x 4 ft (1.22 m x 1.22 m) aluminum deck with a black diamond-plate surface.
  • Folded size: the footprint of a deck when packed for carrying or storage.
  • Load rating: the weight a deck is rated to hold, as stated by the manufacturer.
  • Setup crew: the number of people a supplier says one deck needs to unfold, stand up and connect.

Which weight number should you ask a supplier for?

Ask for the weight of one deck with its legs, as it is carried. Listings may give a stage weight, a deck weight without legs, or a shipping weight with packaging, and those numbers are not comparable. Write down which one each supplier gave you.

Each MyStage deck weighs 42 lbs (19 kg), and five legs (four angled legs plus a center leg) are included with every deck. Because every MyStage stage uses the same deck, totals are simple arithmetic: an 8 ft x 8 ft stage is four decks, or 168 lbs (76 kg) in four separate carries, and an 8 ft x 16 ft stage is eight decks, or 336 lbs (152 kg) in eight carries. Those totals are our calculation from the per-deck weight. A stage built from fewer, larger pieces may need two people per piece even at a similar total weight.

How does deck weight affect real handling and storage?

Deck weight decides who can carry it, folded size decides where it fits, and the carry method decides how far it can go. Check all three against the route your crew actually walks.

Before you buy, walk that route and note stairs, narrow doors, elevator size and the distance from the vehicle to the stage spot. A deck that folds to 2 ft x 4 ft (0.61 m x 1.22 m) and hangs from a shoulder strap leaves a hand free for railings and doors, which matters on stairs and in tight back hallways.

Then measure where the stage will live between events. Compare the folded size against the closet, shelf, trailer or cargo area you plan to use, and count how many decks must fit. In a shared school or church storage room, a known folded footprint is easier to plan around than a packed size you have to guess.

For longer carries, MyStage sells a gear bag (US$88) that holds one folded deck, castors (US$300 for a set of 5, with brakes) and a Gator Utility Cart (US$349). Ask other suppliers whether comparable items exist and whether they cost extra, since that changes the real price of a "lightweight" system.

How do you check a one person stage setup claim?

Ask the supplier to describe setup for one deck step by step, then count the people, tools and minutes. A one person stage setup claim should hold up for a single deck going from folded to standing and connected, with no second pair of hands.

  1. Ask how many people one deck needs. MyStage: one person.
  2. Ask which tools are required. MyStage: no tools; decks connect with wingnuts.
  3. Ask the time per deck. MyStage: about a minute. Multiply by your deck count, then add time for railings, stairs and skirting.
  4. Ask how leveling works. On a sloped lawn or uneven floor, adjustable legs decide whether the deck sits flat. MyStage legs adjust to level the deck.

Assumption, stated plainly: the one-minute figure is per deck for one person. Your total depends on deck count, accessories and carry distance, so build your schedule from your own layout.

Does a lighter stage mean a lower load rating?

Not necessarily, so get the rated load per deck in writing instead of assuming. MyStage decks weigh 42 lbs (19 kg) each and are rated to hold up to 3,400 lbs (1,542 kg) per deck.

When you compare ratings, check whether the number is per deck or per stage, and whether it applies at every leg height. Ask about bounce too. A MyStage deck has a center leg in addition to its four angled legs, and that center leg reduces bounce. For edges and access, MyStage offers railings in 4 ft (1.22 m) sections and stairs with three steps, grip tape and a railing for stages up to 28 in (71 cm).

What does a lightweight stage cost to put together?

Price every option as a complete stage at your size, with legs, railings, stairs and transport items included. Prices on the MyStage Canadian site are in US dollars (USD), and your card issuer converts the charge to Canadian dollars at its own rate and may add a foreign transaction fee.

Reference points from the current catalog: a single 4 ft x 4 ft deck is US$659 and an 8 ft x 8 ft stage (4 decks) is US$2,480. The Stage Builder works out the decks for any footprint and shows the price, so you can line it up against another quote at the same size. Browse every size on the portable stage page, or convert a floor plan with the portable stage sizes and metric measurements guide.

Freight is quoted separately. Canadian orders ship from our warehouse in Ajax, Ontario, to everywhere in Canada except Quebec; send MyStage the products and your postal code for an estimate before you order. The full process is in how to buy a portable stage in Canada.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a MyStage deck weigh?

Each MyStage deck weighs 42 lbs (19 kg). The deck is 4 ft x 4 ft (1.22 m x 1.22 m), folds to 2 ft x 4 ft (0.61 m x 1.22 m), and has a shoulder strap so one person can carry it.

Can one person set up a portable stage alone?

One person can set up a MyStage deck in about a minute with no tools, and decks connect with wingnuts. For any other stage, ask how many people and which tools one section needs.

Is an aluminum stage strong enough for a band or a choir?

Check the rated load, not the material alone. Each MyStage aluminum deck is rated to hold up to 3,400 lbs (1,542 kg), and a center leg reduces bounce. For another product, ask whether its rating is per deck or per stage.

Do lightweight stages work on uneven ground outdoors?

That depends on whether the legs adjust. MyStage legs adjust to level each deck, and the stage is designed to make a flat, level surface on uneven ground outdoors. Standard legs adjust from 4 to 28 in (10 to 71 cm).

How do I get a shipping price for a portable stage in Canada?

Contact MyStage with the products you want and your postal code for a freight estimate before ordering. Orders ship from Ajax, Ontario, so there are no customs or brokerage steps for you. Confirm any applicable taxes on your quote.
