Choosing a stage
4 ft x 4 ft vs 4 ft x 8 ft Stage Decks

A 4 ft x 4 ft stage deck is easier for one person to carry, store and rearrange; a 4 ft x 8 ft deck covers the same floor with fewer pieces. MyStage makes only 4 ft x 4 ft (1.22 m x 1.22 m) decks, 42 lbs (19 kg) each, and builds 4 ft x 8 ft from two.
The right portable stage deck size depends on your crew, your storage room and how often the layout changes.
What is the difference between a 4 ft x 4 ft and a 4 ft x 8 ft stage deck?
The difference is area per piece: a 4 ft x 4 ft deck covers 16 sq ft (1.49 sq m), and a 4 ft x 8 ft deck covers 32 sq ft (2.98 sq m). Two of the smaller decks cover exactly the same footprint as one of the larger.
In this guide, "4 ft x 4 ft deck" means a MyStage deck: aluminum, with a black diamond-plate surface and five legs. "One-piece 4 ft x 8 ft panel" means a single panel of that size in general. Designs, weights and leg systems vary by manufacturer, so the comparison below does not assign specifications to any other brand.
How do 4x4 vs 4x8 stage decks compare side by side?
Where the last column says to check or ask, get that figure from the panel's maker before you buy.
| Factor | One MyStage 4 ft x 4 ft deck | 4 ft x 8 ft MyStage stage (2 decks) | One-piece 4 ft x 8 ft panel (general) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footprint | 1.22 m x 1.22 m | 1.22 m x 2.44 m | 1.22 m x 2.44 m |
| Weight per piece | 42 lbs (19 kg) | 84 lbs (38 kg) in total, carried as two 42 lb (19 kg) pieces | Varies by manufacturer; check the spec sheet |
| Handling | Folds in half, shoulder strap, one person carries it | Two one-person carries | One larger piece; ask how many people should carry it |
| Crew needs | One person sets up a deck in about a minute, no tools | One person, two decks, joined with wingnuts | Ask the manufacturer about crew size and tools |
| Storage | Folds to 2 ft x 4 ft (0.61 m x 1.22 m); gear bag holds one folded deck | Two folded decks, 2 ft x 4 ft (0.61 m x 1.22 m) each | Ask whether it folds and its stored size |
| Layout flexibility | Builds any grid in 4 ft (1.22 m) steps in both directions | Can split into two separate 4 ft x 4 ft risers | Builds in 4 ft x 8 ft units; some shapes need a smaller filler panel |
| Connections | Connects to neighboring decks with wingnuts | One seam between the two decks | No seam inside the panel; fewer seams across a large stage |
| Legs | Five: four angled legs plus a center leg that reduces bounce | Ten, five under each deck | Varies; ask about leg count and height range |
Which deck size is easier for one person to carry and set up?
The 4 ft x 4 ft deck is the size built for one person. A MyStage deck weighs 42 lbs (19 kg), folds in half to 2 ft x 4 ft (0.61 m x 1.22 m) and has a shoulder strap, so one person can carry it and set it up in about a minute without tools.
A one-piece 4 ft x 8 ft panel puts twice the area into a single load. That can be fine for a crew that always works in pairs, but it is the question to settle before buying: ask the manufacturer for the panel's weight and how many people it recommends for carrying and setup.
To plan crew for a MyStage setup, use these steps:
- Count the decks in the stage (a 4 ft x 8 ft stage is two; an 8 ft x 16 ft stage is eight).
- Allow about a minute per deck for one person to unfold it and set the legs, as a planning assumption.
- Add time for leveling, connecting the wingnuts, and fitting railings, stairs and skirting.
- Add a second person to share the decks if time is short; nothing in the deck itself requires one.
Which deck size takes less storage space?
For the same stage area, the stored size depends on how each deck folds. Each MyStage deck folds to 2 ft x 4 ft (0.61 m x 1.22 m), so a 4 ft x 8 ft stage stores as two folded decks of that size.
Smaller pieces also fit storage such as a closet, a back hallway or a corner of a gym storeroom. A gear bag (US$88) holds one folded deck. If a one-piece panel is on your list, ask whether it folds and what its stored dimensions are, then measure the storage door.

Which deck size gives more layout flexibility?
The 4 ft x 4 ft deck gives more layout flexibility, because it builds in 4 ft (1.22 m) steps in both directions. With modular stage panels of that size, a 12 ft x 12 ft stage is nine decks, a 4 ft x 12 ft riser is three, and a 4 ft wide thrust or runway can stick out from any edge.
A system made only of 4 ft x 8 ft panels covers area in 32 sq ft units. A 12 ft x 12 ft square (144 sq ft) or a 4 ft x 12 ft riser (48 sq ft) is not a whole number of those panels, so it needs a smaller filler panel. When comparing systems, ask whether smaller panels are sold.
The smaller deck also splits more ways. A 4 ft x 8 ft MyStage stage can come apart into two 4 ft x 4 ft decks for a lectern riser and a drum riser in two different rooms, since each deck stands on its own five legs. To test a layout before you buy, use the Stage Builder, which works out the decks for any footprint and shows the price.
Does a 4 ft x 4 ft grid mean more connections?
Yes. A stage built from 4 ft x 4 ft decks has more seams than the same stage built from 4 ft x 8 ft panels, and each seam is a connection to make at setup.
Counting the edges where two pieces meet, an 8 ft x 16 ft stage has 10 seams when built from eight 4 ft x 4 ft decks, and 4 seams when built from four 4 ft x 8 ft panels laid in a two-by-two grid. MyStage decks connect with wingnuts, with no tools needed.
The trade-off runs the other way for support. Every MyStage deck has its own center leg to reduce bounce and its own adjustable legs, which are designed to level each deck on uneven ground outdoors. Standard legs adjust from 4 to 28 in (10 cm to 71 cm); Shorties give 8 in and 10 in (20 cm, 25 cm) settings, and Biggies go up to 36 in (91 cm).
How much does a 4 ft x 8 ft MyStage stage cost?
A 4 ft x 8 ft MyStage stage costs US$1,260 for the two decks. Other options at the same size from the Canadian catalog:
- One 4 ft x 4 ft deck: US$659
- 4 ft x 8 ft stage (2 decks): US$1,260
- 4 ft x 8 ft stage with 2 railings and 2 skirts: US$1,499
Prices are in US dollars and exclude freight and taxes. Every MyStage deck carries a 60-day manufacturer guarantee covering defects.
Which should you choose?
Choose by who moves the stage and how often the shape changes. Use this checklist:
- Choose 4 ft x 4 ft decks if one person often sets up alone, storage is a closet or a vehicle, or the same decks need to become a stage, a riser and a runway on different days.
- Consider one-piece 4 ft x 8 ft panels if you always have a crew of two or more, the stage is large and rarely changes shape, and fewer seams matter more than carry weight. Confirm the panel's weight, folded size and crew needs with its manufacturer.
